If Mario Aburto, the confessed killer of Mexican politician Luis Donaldo Colosio, has further information about the 1994 incident’s true events, he will be offered protection, said Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) on the morning of Thursday, Oct. 28.

If Aburto and the family have something to say about his legal process that reveals another version of the facts, and if he can prove that he was tortured, that he was threatened and that for that reason he has kept silent, the Mexican government would no doubt protect him because we are very interested in making sure there is justice with the case,” said López Obrador.

Recently, the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) made a request to Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to investigate acts of torture against the alleged murderer, which some say led to his admission of guilt.

Relatives of Aburto have likewise raised concern that he has “disappeared” or “incommunicado,” a claim the government has denied, urging the CNDH to reopen the investigation against him for purported violations.

“Mr. Aburto is being held in this federal prison, no, he is not incommunicado, he is absolutely in good health,” said Secretary of Security Rosa Icela Rodríguez. “We are reviewing with the legal authorities how to respond to the recommendation of the CNDH. Aburto has been supervised by the CNDH, there have been visitors from the commission who have monitored Mr. Aburto’s state of health.”

“In this administration there has been no lack of human rights, he has even had communication with his family, he has constant communication with the outside world,” added Icela Rodríguez, mentioning Aburto is currently studying law and thus proven to not be held in solitary confinement.

López Obrador went on to say he would ask Undersecretary of Human Rights from the Secretariat of the Interior Alejandro Encinas to meet with Aburto’s relatives to learn further details about the case.
