Two people were killed and four injured, including one international tourist, during a cartel shootout at a luxury resort near Cancun, Quintana Roo, on Thursday, Nov. 4.

According to local police accounts, 15 men armed with long guns stormed the Puerto Morelos resort’s beach from a boat and opened fire on members of a rival gang,

The coastal Caribean state, which is a major source of tourism revenues for Mexico, has been plagued recently by growing drug violence, scaring away many vacationers, both national and foreign.

As the state’s murder rate spirals further and further out of control, the Mexican government has taken charge of all 11 Quintana Roo police forces to try to reestablish order.

The region was once ruled by the bloodthirsty Zetas Cartel, but in recent months both the Sinaloa Cartel and the Gulf Cartel have trying to gain control of the tourist-dollar-rich state.
