Mexico broke another record of daily covid cases on Tuesday, Jan. 18, with close to 50,000 new cases registered by the Public Health Secretariat (SSA).

In total, the SSA reported 49,343 new covid-19 infections and 320 deaths in one 24-hour period.

That raises the total number of confirmed cases in the country since the pandemic began nearly two years ago to 4,434,758 cases and 301,789 deaths, although the real numbers are probably much higher since very little covid testing is done in Mexico.

The previous record for daily cases was reached on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 47,113 infections.

The highly contagious omicron variant is now the major strain of covid-19 in Mexico.
