In a written statement, Juventudes Morena Estado de México said that Putin was merely acting “in the legitimate defense of his people” when he sent troops into Ukraine.
The statement went on to say (incorrectly) that Putin was “prioritizing world peace by intervening militarily in Ukrainian territory with the intention of removing neo-Nazi forces that had murdered entire populations of Russian descendants in Ukraine.”
(Ironically, Ukraine’s charismatic president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is in fact Jewish and his grandfather fought against the Nazis during the Second World War along side Russian troops.)
The Morena-sponsored youth group likewise falsely blamed the United States and European allies for “causing the conflict,” by encouraging Ukraine to join NATO and to allow weapons of mass destruction to be placed within its territory.
The Juventudes Morena said that the United States and the European Union were “generating hatred and fear based on an imperialist doctrine that has polarized the world and led to coups, creating wars, famines and diseases with the sole excuse of bringing ‘democracy’ to the world.”
Shocked by the brazen and inaccurate statement, the official EdoMéx offices of Morena responded by saying that the Juventudes group had spoken out of turn and that their comments “did not reflect” the official party line regarding the conflict.
Although AMLO has refused to impose any sanctions against Russia for its aggressive assaults into Ukraine, he has repeatedly appealed for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict and condemned “the invasion by any country into the sovereign territory of another.”
For its part, the Russian Embassy in Mexico issued its appreciation of Juventudes Morena for its support and solidarity.
