After audio recordings of Mexican Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero were leaked on YouTube on Friday, March 4, showing him plotting with Federal Prosecutor Juan Ramos López regarding the ongoing “case” against Gertz Manero’s 94-year-old sister-in-law and 69-year-old niece, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) once again expressed his unflinching support of the controversial head of the nation’s “justice” system.
During his daily press conference at the National Palace on Monday, March 7, AMLO defended Gertz Manero, claiming that the tapes were probably part of a “conservative plot” to discredit him and his leftist administration.
López Obrador said that he had not yet heard the leaked conversations, in which Gertz Manero issues instructions to Ramos López as to how to overturn a decision by a lower court justice to drop the case on lack of evidence, but the president said that it was up to the Mexican Supreme Court (SCJN) to resolve the matter.
The president went on to say that he “sympathized” with Gertz Manero, who he said is “only seeking justice for his brother, Federico,” who died in hospital in 2015 at age 85 from a heart attack, related to a chronic and pre-existent heart failure condition, according to an autopsy performed by government authorities.
Gertz Manero has alleged that his brother was the victim of medical negligence by Federico’s wife and daughter, who has been in prison awaiting trial since October 2020. By orders of Gertz Manero, there is an outstanding warrant for the arrest of the daughter’s mother.
In the meantime, Gertz Manero has expropriated all of his in-laws assets, including their home, art collection and bank accounts, worth millions of dollars.
“I didn’t listen to the leaked recordings,” AMLO said, “but I do have the basic information. The court has to decide on this case. I understand the personal, moral and human situation of the prosecutor because it is a matter related to his brother.”
Despite the overpowering evidence against Gertz Manero showing him blatantly interfering in a legal case in which he has a vested interest, as well as a plethora of other controversies, including Gertz Manero’s attempt to imprison 31 leading scientists and academics who exposed the fact that he had plagiarized his professional thesis and the recent exposure of his undeclared offshore bank accounts by the Pandora Papers, AMLO said he continues to trust Gertz Manero implicitly, adding that the leaking of the audios were no doubt a scheme to discredit the attorney general.
Essentially a rubber stamp for the president’s legal assaults on his political enemies, Gertz Manero has become AMLO’s Gold Boy by adhering to AMLO’s demands.
“We have to be careful because there are many conflicting interests involved,” AMLO said.
“The recording of conversations in this way should not be done by any citizen. The SCJN will decide on this case next week.”
It is worth noting that Mexico’s SCJN is packed with AMLO cronies.
It is also worth noting that on Monday, legislators from Mexico’s opposition National Action Party (PAN) and Party of the Democratic Revolution demanded Gertz Mancero’s immediate resignation.
