Opposition party mayors, who make up the Mexico City Mayors Union (Unacdmx), have, in the last six months, filed 22 formal charges of constitutional violations by the capital’s government — run by Governor Claudia Sheinbaum of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s (AMLO) leftist National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party — before Mexico’s Supreme Court (SCJN).
The alleged suits, which were filed by the Unacdmx between Oct, 1, 2021, and April 18, 2022, include a broad spectrum of alleged illegal activities by the Morena governor, including a unilateral economic reactivation plan and the homologation of the color of city patrol cars.
The municipal mayors claim that Sheinbaum never consulted them in making unilateral decisions, in strict violation of the Mexican Constitution.
Of the 22 cases, the SCJN has agreed to review 10, while five are still pending a court decision and seven have been dismissed.
