Daniel Picazo, a consultant for Mexico’s conservative National Action Party (PAN) in the Federal Chamber of Deputies, was lynched and burned to death on Friday, June 10, in the municipality of Huauchinango, Puebla, by a group of residents who later claimed to have confused him with a criminal, authorities reported.

Picazo, a 31-year-old political adviser to Federal Deputy Joanna Torres, was taken by a vigilante group, who beat him and burned him alive in the municipal field and municipal police looked on and did nothing to prevent the murder.

The group later claimed that they had confused Picazo with an alleged child kidnapper.

Torres has called for a full investigation into Picazo’s murder.
