With the shooting death of Noé Ornelas Sanguino, mayor of the town of Villa Jiménez, in the northwestern Mexican state of Michoacán, whose body was found on an abandoned stretch of highway on Monday, June 27, there have been at least 59 mayors and municipal alderman murdered so far under the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), who still has nearly two and a half years left in his six-year term.
According to a report by the consulting firm Etellekt, this figure is 20 percent higher than the number of mayors and alderman killed under the entire six-year term of former Mexican President Felipe Calderón.
In a report released on Monday, Etellekt said that Mexico’s southern central state of Oaxaca has had the highest number of dead mayors, with a total of 12 victims so far under AMLO.
Michoacán and the State of Mexico (EdoMéx) have had seven mayors murdered, while Veracruz has had six killed.
Next up on this gruesome list is Guerrero, with four murdered mayors, and Sonora, Guanajuato and Chihuahua with three murdered mayors each.
Chiapas, Jalisco, Puebla, Sinaloa and Morelos have each had two mayors killed, and Baja California, Coahuila, Hidalgo and Tamaulipas have each had one murdered.
Etellek reported that over the course of the last 22 years, 226 Mexican mayors have lost their lives in violent acts.
Of those 11 murders of mayors occurred during the entire administration of former President Vicente Fox, 49 during the entire administration of Calderón and 107 during the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto.
The remaining 59 cases have been registered so far during the government of López Obrador.
