Yet another Mexican journalist was gunned down on Tuesday, Aug. 2, becoming the 13th reporter killed in the country this year.
Ernesto Méndez, editorial director of the Tu Voz media outlet and reporter for Zona Franca and Correo newspapers, was murdered inside a bar in Guanajuato’s Colonia Cerro Prieto.
He was the 13th journalist killed in Mexico, making the country the worst for journalism worldwide after Ukraine, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).
In addition to Méndez, three other people died and two more were injured in the attack.
In almost all attacks on journalists in Mexico, the perpetrators are not prosecuted.
Also, the leftist government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) has not taken the matter seriously, and has earned international condemnation for his constant callous verbal assaults on journalists, which critics have said open the door for violence against media representatives.
