A series of arrests of alleged drug cartel kingpins in the western Mexican states of Guanajuato and Jalisco set off a terrifying night of mayhem and destruction late Tuesday, Aug. 9.
As residents ran for cover and sheltered in place, angry gangbangers set businesses and vehicles on fire in both states as an apparent act of retaliation.
Stark images of men commandeering cars and buses and setting them on fire flooded the internet Tuesday night and the following day.
On Wednesday, Aug. 10, the Oxxo convenience store chain reported that at least 25 of its stores had been looted and/or damaged during the fracas.
Also on Wednesday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) said he had deployed National Guard and military troops to the area to investigate.
Ongoing turf wars between various cartels have plagued the region for several years now.
