Just three days after introducing its controversial new public education plan — which prioritizes political indoctrination over academic study — and promising that it would initially only be used as a pilot program in 1,000 public schools, the administration of Mexico’s leftist president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) .on Friday, Aug. 19, announced that, instead, it will be all public and private schools nationwide.
In Friday’s evening edition of the government Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) stated that the new plan will be used in all preschool, primary and secondary classes.
The DOF announcement clarified that the new plan would enter into effect as of Saturday, Aug. 20, just days before the start of the first session of the School Technical Council, scheduled for Monday, Aug. 22, so that teachers could begin to themselves with the new scheme.
It also specified that the local educational authorities will be the ones that will carry out the corresponding school, educational, teacher training and updating, administrative and management forecasts for their application, as well as the dissemination of information regarding study plans.
The DOF announcement likewise stated that in 2023, the application of the educational plan designed i¿by the AMLO government will be mandatory throughout the Mexico for all public and private schools incorporated into the National Education System.
