Mexico’s National Center for the Arts (Cenart) is slated to host a four-day wooden puppet festival from Thursday, Aug. 25, through Sunday, Aug. 28.

The annual festival, titled Wooden Hearts and now in its second year, will showcase four plays using puppets by the Teatrapos puppet company.

On Thursday, Aug, 25, at 8 p.m., the group will perform the play “Callantes,” in coordination with the Triciclodemetal puppet company from Veracruz.

The four-act play explores issues of alienation within modern Mexican society.

On Friday, Aug. 26, also at 8 p.m., the group will perform, with Mexico City’s La Quinta Teatro company, a whimsical children’s play about Sá, “a man with a mountain in his hat and butterflies in his shoes.”

The following night, Saturday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m., the group will present the humorous “Great Mother Coatlicue,” a musical about an Aztec goddess.

And on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 6 p.m., Teatrapos will join Querétaro’s La Gaviota Teatro to perform “The Red Threat,” a montage of characters faced with various social issues.

Cenart is located at Avenida Río Churubusco 79 in Colonia Country Club, C.P. 04210 Mayor’s Office Coyoacán.

Tickets for the plays can be purchased at the door or through Ticketmaster, and cost 150 pesos each.
