Covid-19 was the leading cause of death in Mexico in 2021, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
The second- and third-largest cause of death in Mexico last year, according to a report released by the Inegi on Wednesday, Oct. 26, were heart disease and diabetes, respectively.
The Inegi report stated that there were 88 deaths per 10,000 inhabitants in Mexico in 2021, compared to just 86 per 10,000 in 2020.
Of the total deaths, 92.5 percent were due to diseases and health-related problems, while 7.5 percent were the consequence of external causes such as accidents, homicides and suicides.
