Ten guards and seven inmates died after an attack on the Cereso Prison in the northern Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, that state prosecutor’s office reported Sunday, Jan. 1.
On Sunday morning, gunmen in armored vehicles opened fire against the security personnel of the prison, the office said in a statement.
Mexican soldiers and state police regained control of the prison late Sunday.
Local police killed two gunmen in a vehicle, according to the authorities.
The identities of the 30 inmates who escaped have not yet been released.
