Mexican director Guillermo del Toro’s macabre film “Pinocchio” will contend in the best animation feature category during the upcoming 95th Motion Picture Academy Awards on March 12.

Del Toro’s reimagined stop-motion interpretation of Carlo Collodi’s classic 1883 children’s story, which is transformed into a commentary on the Italy of fascist Benito Mussolini during the 1930s, was also nominated in the same category for the Golden Globes.

So far in his career, Del Toro has six Oscar nominations.

Del Toro was one of three Mexicans nominated for Oscars this year, along with Alejandro González Iñárritu and Alfonso Cuarón, for the cinematography of “Bardo” and best short “Le Pupille,” respectively.
