Once-internationally renowned Mexican film star and diva Irma Serrano died Wednesday, March 1, from a heart attack at age 89, the National Actors Association reported.
Serrano, better known as “La Tigresa” (“The Tigress”), began her career as a singer of ranchero music in the early 1960s, and then expanded into the Mexican film industry as a powerful femme fatal in the 1970s and 1980s.
In the 1990s, she turned to politics, serving as a national senator for her home state of Chiapas.
Rumored to have had a torrid love affair with Mexico’s then-President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz in the 1960s, Serrano was no stranger to scandal, having acted in numerous X-rated films and plays and having been arrested for making death threats and brandishing a gun at a tenant who refused to move out of one of her properties.
