Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) on Monday, June 19, announced the appointment of former Labor Secretary Luisa María Alcalde Luján as his new secretary of the Interior (SeGob).
Speaking during his daily press conference at the National Palace, AMLO highlighted Alcade Luján’s political career, saying she was very capable of assuming the new position.
“Luisa María Alcalde Luján is young, and it is very important to think about a generational change in order to give young people an opportunity in politics,” he said.
“In addition, she is a lawyer and has already served as a legislator and produced very good work in the Labor Secretariat. Under her, the secretariat managed to increase the minimum wages.”
He ended by saying that Alcalde Lujan will be assuming her new position later this week.
Alcalde Luján will replace current SeGob Secretary Adán Augusto López, who is competing for the candidacy of AMLO’s leftist National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party for the 2024 presidential elections.
