It’s Time for Xochitl to Show Us her Cards Posted on July 10, 2023 by Alejandro Envila Fisher Leave a comment OPINION Mexican presidential hopeful Xóchitl Gálvez. Photo: Google By ALEJANDRO ENVILA FISHER It hasn’t been long since presidential hopeful Xóchitl Gálvez burst onto Mexico’s national stage to challenge the entire political system, including the government, but the urgent need for structured, technically sound proposals has become abundantly evident. As the days progress and the spark and sympathy with which Gálvez first captivated potential voters begins to fade, people are beginning to question her platform and objectives, demanding a clear and concrete proposal. If Gálvez wants to go from a political quirk to a transcendent leader, she will soon have to start talking about what she hopes to accomplish if elected as president in 2024. In addition, he must do so with sufficient technical solidity, but without renouncing the simple, inclusive, fresh language that made the Mexican public trust her. And she only has a few weeks to do this. This challenge is not minor, since it implies that, without ceasing to be herself, Gálvez must demonstrate that she is up to the task of rebuilding a torn Mexico and reconciling a polarized society. To achieve this, she will need a lot more than just nice phrases and agile responses to the negativity sown by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and his cohorts. Without surrendering her trademark smile, inspiring words and mental agility that have allowed her to stand up to the AMLO regime, Gálvez must put her ideas down in black and white — projects that will help to rebuild Mexico and recover lost security, fight against organized crime, spur economic growth, increase employment, control inflation, reconstruct the healthcare system, reactivate the countryside, design a non-assistance-based social policy, generate job opportunities, improve education, shield democracy and its institutions, stop the abuses of the party-ocracy and attempt to restore rule of law. These are just some of the many issues Gálvez will have to begin to address before her media charm becomes part of the political landscape and take advantage of her current popularity. Gálvez also has another major challenge: to prove that she is not just former President Vicente Fox’s daughter-in-law and that she is not the creation of that dark character named Claudio X. González and everything he represents. Gálvez cannot ignore allegations that her surprising candidacy is a Frankenstein created by the Mexican plutocracy to confront a ruler who threatens to establish a maximum autocracy. If she really wants to be president, Gálvez has to start dedicating time to doing real politics, and, for that, she needs to take time away from media activism or use it to talk about issues that really matter. Only in this way will she begin to show that she is not just a political sideshow or a puppet employee of the nation’s billionaires. To clear away such doubts, Gálvez must start talking about the Mexico that she intends to build, and how she intends to rebuild it.
