Dear Caroline,

I often find myself in situations where people come to me with their problems, and I don’t know how to help. I feel like I’m letting them down. What can I do to make a difference in their lives?

Dear EVZ,

Whether or not you realize it, you are already making a difference.

Being there for someone doesn’t always mean offering a solution. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is listen with an open mind and a compassionate heart. In other words: listening is plenty of doing.

When you’re at a loss for words, “I don’t know what to say. I’m so glad you told me,” delivered from the heart can be like medicine for their pain.

Today’s world is in dire need of listeners, EVZ; I think you should feel good about yourself.

Caroline
