On Tuesday, Mexico’s Fifth District Judge in Administrative Matters Sandra de Jesús Zúñiga struck down the preventative suspension requested by anti-bullfighting organization Todas y Todos por Amor a los Toros that banned the sport from being held in Mexico City’s Plaza México back in May 2022.
The Second Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) previously rejected the suspension against bullfighting on Dec. 6, allowing the fights to resume at the top of 2024.
With De Jesús Zuñiga’s decision now enacted, Mexico’s traditional bullfights will continue to be held in the arena for the sport’s 2024 season, as any appeal challenges in front of a collegiate court will take at least two or three months to complete.
“The trial continues to decide the merits of the matter, which can be summarized with the question: is the mistreatment to which the bulls are subjected in this show constitutional?” said Mexico City Deputy Jorge Gaviño Ambriz following the ruling’s announcement. “We will promote all appropriate legal resources.”
