Mexico’s Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) achieved its most successful month of operations on record in January, according to new data released by the airport.
The controversial facility was built by orders of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) following the federal executive’s controversial multi-billion-dollar cancellation of the then-under-construction Texcoco Airport shortly after he entered office in 2018.
Now, two years after the AIFA was inaugurated in March 2022, the airport reportedly processed 328,906 passengers in January 2024 – up 76.2 percent year-over-year.
This places the AIFA’s total passenger count at 3.8 million travelers since it first opened its doors to the public.
However, despite its successful month, the AIFA still only handled approximately 8.6 percent of the number of travelers processed by the capital’s main airport, the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), during January.
The AIFA’s January figures likewise showed the facility’s main use as a domestic terminal, only registering 5.8 percent of its travelers with international destinations.
