Mexico Registers Highest Global Increase in Support for Autocraticies

According to new data from the independent fact tank Pew Research Center, Mexico was the country with the largest growth in support for autocratic regimes between 2017 and 2023.

Mexico’s support for a “system in which a strong leader can make decisions without interference from parliament or the courts” went up from 27 percent in 2017 to 50 percent in 2023, an increase of 23 percent across the six years.

Kenya, the country with the second highest growth in autocratic support according to Pew Research Center, only grew by 13 percent in this metric from 2017 to 2023 in comparison.

Likewise, the fact tank registered the Mexican population’s belief that their politicians do not care what citizens think at 78 percent, above the global average of 74 percent from the 24 countries surveyed.

Approximately 58 percent of Mexico’s population was surveyed as believing a military regime in the country is a “good” or “very good” thing, versus 40 percent who viewed military regimes as unfavorable.

The Pew Research Report went on to note that those with lower education rates and lower income levels were more likely to support military regimes than those with higher education levels and incomes.
