On Thursday, Aug. 1, Mexico’s President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she appointed former Supreme Court Justice of the Nation (SCJN) President Arturo Zaldívar – along with Leticia Ramírez Amaya  – to her presidential cabinet.

Zaldívar, the titular figure of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s (AMLO) so-called Zaldvívar Law, resigned from his position as SCJN minister back in November 2023 in favor of joining Sheinbaum’s presidential campaign.

Now, after Thursday’s announcement, Zaldívar is set to serve as Presidential Coordinator of Policy and Government under the Sheinbaum administration, where he will notably handle the forthcoming discussions on the National Regeneration Movement’s (Morena) controversial judicial reform.

“This appointment honors me, excites me and commits me,” said Zaldívar at the time. “It is a privilege for me to be able to accompany, as part of her team, the first female president of Mexico, a committed, brilliant, scientific and people-oriented woman.”

“I will work hard, with loyalty to Mexico, with loyalty to the presidency, in coordination with my colleagues, and I am sure that we will be able to achieve results that are tangible and measurable in the life of democracies,” added the former SCJN president.

During the same conference, Sheinbaum also announced Leticia Ramírez Amaya – the current federal Secretary of Public Education – as her Presidential Coordinator of Intergovernmental Affairs and Social Participation as well as Carlos Augusto Morales’ retention of his position as the presidency’s Technical Secretary.
