In a 4-to-1 vote made on Wednesday, Aug. 28, the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF) of Mexico’s Supreme Court Justice of the Nation (SCJN) voted in favor of an initiative acknowledging the in-power National Regeneration Movement (Morena) and its allies’ qualified majority in the Mexican Chamber of Deputies.
The TEPJF ruling comes in response to the hundreds of challenges filed by opposition parties the PAN (National Action Party), PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party) and Citizen’s Movement with the SCJN against Morena’s supposed overrepresentation in the Chamber of Deputies.
According to the results of Mexico’s June 2 federal elections that were ratified by the independent electoral organization the National Electoral Institute (INE), Morena and its allies the Green Party (PVEM) and Labor Party (PT) now represent approximately 364 seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
This represents a qualified majority, which means Morena can pass through the changes to the Mexican Constitution – such as the controversial judicial reform – long aspired to by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) that were blocked by the opposition.
