During his daily morning press conference on Friday, Sep. 6, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) criticized Supreme Court Justice of the Nation (SCJN) President Norma Piña for her proposal that the SCJN could block the federal executive’s controversial judicial reform, characterizing the potential interference as “aberration.”
“I feel that they have no legal basis, it would be an aberration and of course, a flagrant violation of the Mexican Constitution to stop the process of analysis, discussion and, if necessary, approval of the constitutional reform dedicated to the judicial branch,” said López Obrador.
“There is no constitutional basis, it would be arbitrary and this would affect public life, it would affect, of course, what should be an authentic state of law,” continued AMLO.
According to the federal executive, the SCJN’s interference in the proposed reform would represent the judicial branch’s existing corruption his reform would purportedly fix.
“It would be like opting for the law of the jungle, making it clear that they do not care about democracy or justice, that they are only thinking about their interests, their privileges, and that they are openly in favor of corruption,” said López Obrador.
The news comes just one day after Piña opened a consultation with her fellow court ministers to discuss the Supreme Court’s right to interfere in the reform following repeated requests from other federal and local judges.
