Mexico’s newly sworn-in President, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo (Pardo), aims to build at least one million new homes across the country throughout her six-year term, the federal executive’s administration announced on Monday, Oct. 14.
Echoing sentiments she shared during her Oct. 1 inauguration, Sheinbaum reiterated her administration’s commitment to addressing Mexico’s housing crisis through the million-home construction project, which will be handled by the Mexican National Fund for Workers’ Housing (Infonavit) and the National Housing Commission (Conavi).
CSP went on to say that her presidency would regularize another one million homes during her six-year term.
Secretary of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development (Sedatu) Edna Elena Vega Rangel emphasized the plan’s inclusivity. These new homes, she said, would be given priority to “women heads of household, youth, Indigenous population and senior citizens.” She also noted that the Sheinbaum administration plans to establish a rental program for younger Mexican citizens.
“An affordable rent that does not exceed 30 percent of the income of young workers, and for students, a socioeconomic study will be carried out to determine their ability to pay,” added Conavi Director Rodrigo Chávez.
Chávez also revealed that 285 billion pesos have been designated for constructing the project’s initial 500,000 homes.
