On Wednesday, Nov. 20, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo (CSP) praised the public works projects carried out by the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) and Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) during the six-year term of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO.

The public duties given to the Sedena included the construction of megaprojects like the Tren Maya and the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA). At the same time, the Semar was granted jurisdiction over Mexico’s customs operations and oversight of the Mexico City International Airport (AICM).

During Wednesday’s daily morning press conference, Sheinbaum claimed that tasking the navy and army with national development works will help uplift the Mexican economy and bring peace to the nation.

“Today, we are living on the second floor of the Fourth Transformation (4T). It is based on the consolidation of justice, democracy, and freedom to achieve the happiness of our people fully. Welfare programs, schools, universities, and the health system continue and are expanded,” began the federal executive.

“Next year, together with the army and the navy, we will begin the construction of new passenger trains, highways, and drinking water works,” added CSP. “Better-paying jobs are being created, peace is being built every day, and there is an environment conducive to investment.”

In conclusion, Sheinbaum highlighted the successes of AMLO’s administration – namely, integrating the National Guard into the Sedena, the constitutional reform of the Mexican judiciary and the controversial national energy reform – as harkening back to the 1917 Mexican Constitution.
