Starting Monday, Nov. 23, all nonessential businesses in Mexico City — including stores, shopping malls, bars, movie theaters and gymnasiums — must close by 7 p.m. daily to help slow the growing surge of covid-19 cases, Mexico City Major Claudia Sheinbaum announced Friday, Nov. 20.

Under the new ordinance, restaurants will be allowed to remain open until 10 p.m., but must stop selling alcoholic beverages at 7 p.m.

As covid cases continue to rise in the capital, Sheinbaum said that extended sanitary restrictions needed to be implemented to prevent further infections.

In the last few days, she said, the number of daily hospitalizations from the coronavirus has soared by about 350 people, higher than the number in even previous peak months.

Sheinbaum also called on Mexico City residents to avoid any in-person meetings of more than 10 people and to observe anti-covid protocols such as mask-wearing, social distancing and frequent hand-washing.
