The Mexican Army airlifted 15.2 tons of humanitarian aid to Honduras for those affected by Hurricanes Iota and Eta, the Mexican Foreign Relations Secretariat (SRE) reported Saturday, Dec. 12.

In a statement, SRE said that a C-130 Hercules cargo plane from the Mexican Air Force had been responsible for taking the shipment of food and water to the Central American country, which was greatly affected by the two storms in November.

The aircraft took off from the military base at the Mexico City International Airport, after applying controls and sanitary measures to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (covid-19), SRE said.

Personnel from the Mexican Embassy in Honduras received the aid and delivered it to Honduran Vice Chancellor for International Cooperation and Promotion Karen Najarro.

Hurricanes Iota and Eta struck Central America less than two weeks apart in November, causing severe damage to parts of Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala.

According to the United Nations, about 3.7 million people were affected in Honduras by the storms.
