Mexico’s Social Security Institute (IMSS) announced it will convert 139 of its hospitals throughout the country to help battle the coronavirus pandemic and maximize capacity, following several brushes with near-full occupancy.
The IMSS said it would be appropriating 1.607 billion pesos to purchase medical supplies and equipment to distribute throughout the designated hospitals, all of which will be exclusively devoted to serving patients afflicted by covid-19.
Of these 139 hospitals, 18 are located in Mexico City and 14 in the neighboring State of Mexico (Edoméx), as the Mexico City metropolitan area is considered to be the epicenter of Mexico’s coronavirus pandemic.
