The newly created state-owned natural gas company Gas Bienestar began formal operations on Tuesday, Aug. 31, in Mexico City’s Ixtapalapa Precinct with a starting price 10 percent below the maximum set by the country’s Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE).
Gas Bienestar, a subsidiary of the state-run Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) oil company, will offer residents of some Mexico City districts tanks of LP natural gas of 20 kilos for 400 pesos and of 30 kilos to 600 pesos.
In the near future, Gas Bienestar is expected to expand its services to several other priecincts, including Azcapotzalco, Gustavo A. Madero, Xochimilco and Tláhuac.
Pemex Director Octavio Romerio Oropeza officially launched the program during the daily morning press conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) on Tuesday.
The Pemex official said that the company has already outlined 1,680 distribution routes and that by the start of next year, Gas Bienestar will be able to distribute up to 1.2 million cylinders of gas citywide each month.
Using recycled tanks and allegedly insuring that each tank complies with the specified weight of gas it is labeled with (some private companies have been known to defraud customers by skimping on the gas in the tanks they sell), the new company was formed at the behest of the president in order to stop the surging prices of natural gas, which is the main source of cooking and water-heating fuel in Mexico.
