Little Amal, a 12-foot puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee, crossed into Mexico from San Diego, California, on Monday, Jan. 23, as part of her 13-nation world tour.
The giant, partly-animatronic puppet is part of a London performance art project begun in 2021 to help bring global attention to the plight of refugees worldwide.
And after a grueling journey of more than 6,000 kilometers through four continents, Little Amal arrived in Tijuana, one of the main crossing points for migrants entering the United States.
The puppet that has become a symbol of hope for migrants from all over the world is already preparing her journey across Mexico.
Little Amal is the creative initiative of the London-based theater group and the South African Handspring Puppet Company.
The little puppet girl, whose name means “hope” in Arabic, has become an international symbol for child refugees.
She is expected to arrive in Mexico City in November 2023.
