Mexican telenovela star Pablo Lyle was sentenced to five years in prison by a Florida court on Friday, Feb. 3, for having fatally punched a 63-year-old man after a stop-light confrontation in Miami in 2019.

Lyle, 36, who stars in the Netflix telenovela “Yankee,” was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Marisa Tinkler Méndez after the courtroom viewing of security camera footage showing him slug Juan Ricardo Hernández in the face following a roadside argument.

Lyle had claimed that the punch was in self-defense, adding that he had feared that Hernández was armed.

In fact, police officers who arrived at the scene found that Hernández was not armed.

He died in hospital four days later from a traumatic brain injury.

In addition to the five-year sentence, Lyle was ordered to serve eight years of probation, conflict resolution management and 500 hours of community service.

Lyle has 30 days to appeal the sentence.
