In the midst of a surging insecurity crisis in Jerez, Zacatecas, in northern Mexico — where violent shootouts between warring drug cartels have become a nearly daily occurrence — a video of the town’s mayor, Humberto Salazar, a faithful member of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s (AMLO) leftist National Regeneration Movement (Morena) political party, was released on social media on Sunday, Feb. 19, showing him singing a narcocorrido (a narrative ballad glorifying drug capos) about imprisoned Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzman.

The song, titled “JGL” (El Chapo’s initials), was written by the narcocorrido band La Adictiva and is generally considered an ode to the brutal drug lord, who has been linked to the deaths of thousands of Mexicans and U.S. citizens.

So far this year, at least 20 people have died from drug-related violence in Jerez, a town of just 57,000, and at least 16 people have gone missing.
