Just one day after National Action Party (PAN) presidential candidate Xóchitl Gálvez demanded the National Electoral Institute’s (INE) vote-by-vote recount of Mexico’s June 2 federal elections, the National Regeneration Movement’s (Morena) Claudia Sheinbaum – the overwhelming predicted victor of Sunday’s presidential race – agreed to Gálvez’s recount request

The Preliminary Electoral Results Program (PREP) estimated Sheinbaum at winning 59.3 percent of the nation’s vote with 27.9 percent while the INE’s quick count placed Sheinbaum at winning between 58.3 and 60.7 percent and Gálvez between 26.6 and 28.6 percent of the vote.

Sheinbaum announced her support of the vote-by-vote recount in a video message posted to social media on Wednesday, June 5, while making sure to note she was confident in her victory at the polls.

“This district count ends next Sunday at the latest. That day the INE will give the official results of the district count for the Presidency of the Republic,” said Sheinbaum. “Now, we are sure of the result and that there was, as everyone saw, a free, peaceful and democratic election. We agree that all the ballot boxes that must be opened should be opened.”

“Let all the packages be opened, because we are sure of the result we obtained,” continued Sheinbaum.

According to INE President Guadalupe Taddei, Sunday’s electoral process was successful with more than 170,000 polling stations utilized across Mexico.
